Tips for Writing a Great Listing

Posted by Thathorse Admin on 12 Mar, 2009 Posted in Wholesale, Services

Selling your horse or pony can be time consuming and stressful. Here are a few simple tips for writing a listing which grabs the buyer's attention.

Create an eye catching category heading (1-2 words) by describing your horse's greatest asset. Look through different listings and see which ones grab your attention. Here are some examples:

1. Stunning
2. Project horse
3. Bombproof
4. Sensible
5. Reliable

www.thathorse.com ensures all essential details such as age, height, sex, discipline, breed etc are included.

For the description here is a simple formula which works:

* Temperament.
* Bloodlines (if you don't know either leave out or state this).
* What the horse has done. What the horse is doing (give time frames, e.g. has jumped 1.20 3 years ago with previous owner).
* Competition history highlights (include name of event and placings).
* Health Soundness - include major scarring if any.
* Vices.
* What sort of home would be suitable, e.g. beginner, competitive, riding returning to ride, etc.
* Whether price is negotiable or firm.
* Additions (e.g. comes with rugs, some tack - be specific).
* Ensure you check spelling and grammar.

Don't use cliches - every horse has 'potential' so stating this causes your listing to lose impact. Every relevant detail you include will indicate to the buyer if this horse has potential or not.

Don't waffle. Buyers want to be inspired not worn down!
Be honest - we can't stress this enough. Have great photos and a flattering video of your horse at its best.

To sound slick and professional on the phone to potential buyers or sellers, always begin by engaging the caller first in conversation about what they are looking for. Print out this list and keep it handy. Answer each point in more detail and use examples. Leave it by the phone as a memory prompt (don't read it - that will sound false).

This format can also be applied to creating a "Wanted to Buy' Listing as well.

To Anyone who truly loves horses & has a tender heart for minis.
I am 71 & my husband is 83. We have had our precious minis for 10 years.
This past year we have been hit hard by the economy & health issues & we had
to sell our ranch & our alpacas & we have tried hard to keep our 3 adorable minis,
but we just can't afford them. We can't even build a shed to protect them. Princess is a bay-black & white pinto, She is 12years old & is "the lead mare". She was shown as a youngster. Scarlet is Princess' full blood sister. She is a
sorrel & white pinto, 11 years old, trained to harness, but hasn't driven a cart in years. She is the sweetest of the 3 of these very sweet horses. Sienna is also
a sorrel & white pinto. She is 9 years old. All 3 of these horses were used for Children's therapy. They are very people oriented & love children! We are devastated to loose our girls, but we're desperate. We will only sell to someone
who will buy & love all 3 of them. The price is $2,000 & includes, elec. clippers,
halters, leads & what ever else you can use. Eve Miller Colorado Springs, Co.
