In the dark depth of winters we need all the time saving tips we can get! So here are a few to help you get back in front of the fire quicker!
Only Stable if you must
When you are looking at time - there is nothing more time consuming than stabling your horse. If you can leave him out on pasture 24/7. This will save you time and money. Some places stabling is essential so here are some things to help you.
Keep your bedding deep
Create a deep bed in your horses stable. Each day remove the manure and wet spots. Do not dig the bed out or turn over. Toss slightly dirty bedding to the side of the stall and a thin cover of clean bedding over the centre. Properly maintained a deep litter bed is clean, dry has no odour is very cushioning on your horses legs. Completely strip the stall twice a year.
Get the right tools for the job
It might be a poorly sized fork or a wheel barrow that is too little, these things can significantly slow your progress. So invest in good tools as this will save you time. If you are going to get a tractor - get one that will do the job -20 horse power at least!!
Floor mats and other foot covering
Floor coverings such as mats and grids, help with drainage and reduces the amount of bedding you need. Mats also offer further padding for your horse's legs.
Water every where...
Get longer water hoses so you don't have to bucket water anywhere. Automatic watering system delivering fresh clean water to your horse with no effort on your part is pure bliss!
Feed
The easiest way to feed your horse is on grass. Nutritionists agree little and often when feeding concentrates to your horse is the key. However this is not the best way to save time - so what is the compromise? Automatic feeders can significantly reduce the time you spend feeding out and give your horse the regular routine they need for digestive health.
Be the trolly dolly!
Put smaller feed bins with each feed type onto a trolley and wheel it around dishing out as you go! This saves you running back to the shed every five minutes.
Hay
Create an area where hay can be fed in a rack to minimise waste and hold an amount to last a day at least.
Banish brooms!
Instead of sweeping for hours, trying to get it perfect, try a leaf blower or vacuum.
Synthetic gear for daily use
Leather needs regular care to look and act its best. Synthetic gear wears well and requires little care.
Maximise your storage
Spend a rainy afternoon sorting out your storage. Put in shelving, racks and hooks so your horse's things can be stored well and be easily accessible.
Get good fencing
Getting a good paddock layout as this will save you time and money.
Record keeping
Make a simple folder for each horse to store all of the important records and notes. This way things are at your finger tips as you need them.
Groom with both hands
This will take alot of time off your grooming time - also it's a great work out!
