Yann Arthus Bertrand was born in 1946 but didn't develop a passion for photography until the late 1970's, during a trip to Kenya with his wife Anne. He wanted to tell facts with images rather than words and it was then that he discovered the beauty of aerial images. In 1981, he published his first book, "Lions", which was to be followed by 80 others. Ten years later, he created the first aerial photo agency called "Altitude" and also started a new project: images of the world from above. Having UNESCO as a patron, Bertrand published his book in 1999, which became one of the best selling illustrated books.
"Chevaux" was first published in 2003 in France.
This wonderful book is not meant to be put on the shelf with all of your other equine literature. Although not scientific or instructive, this photo book is one of the best books I have ever owned. The photos are of lovely quality and colour compositions with the horses in stances that seem unreal. Yet they are very real, with real horses and people in real situations. Even non-horse people seem to love flicking through the pages and I have a lot of sticky finger prints on my precious book, thanks to someone tracing the outline of one of the beautiful horses pictured.
I was fascinated by the different cultures and traditions. Which are responsible for the presented breeds. Never before did I see the relationship between a country, its culture and its horses. Very informative! I'd definitely recommend this illustrated photo book and although it is expensive, you won't miss the money you spent on it. It would also make a great gift for the horseman or woman who has everything!
